Sitting here at home with sleepy puppies at my feet and the sound of another gorgeous summer thunderstorm as my evening soundtrack, it’s hard to believe that 2 weeks ago I was completely unaware with the next evening would bring.
For those of you who follow my fluffy puppy-filled and exclamation point-riddled Instagram (and Facebook too!) account you’ve likely already heard the happy news–that on May 17th, just before sunset, Jesse proposed and we’re getting married! (eee!)
The previous night, we had both attended my good friend Agatha’s wedding–I was photographing that day and so Jesse had the opportunity to meet my college girlfriends (and they in turn were able to grill him mercilessly throughout the reception ;). We danced to our favorite song (All of You) and when we finally said goodbye as the dance floor cleared, my heart was so happy. Seeing two people I loved say their vows, and seeing even more people I loved meeting my geographer for the first time (and loving him!) made it an absolutely perfect wedding. As we drove home, Jesse mentioned that perhaps it might be nice to take Sunday night for a date night and with all the craziness in recent weeks as he had been getting ready for his summer research, a relaxing evening sounded like the perfect remedy for our busy schedules.
When we woke up the next morning, we decided to grab breakfast at the diner just around the corner from us, where we’d had one of our very first dates. We recapped the evening, made plans for our Sunday and as I sat down to edits and emails that morning, Jesse headed out for errands and was gone most of the day. I didn’t suspect anything though from his absence and when we piled into the car with the pups, I was still completely clueless that anything beyond a relaxing picnic with the dogs was planned. Jesse seemed a little flustered and quiet though, and we made several stops on the way (1: to procure coffees because he said we’d be out “late” and 2: to buy a new charger for his phone because he needed his!). He was still being so secretive about our plans (though as soon as we got on 81N I knew we were headed for Sandy Beach, where we’d had one of our first dates ;).
The evening was perfect–playing fetch with the pups and watching Westley try to learn how to swim, walking along the beach, and finally an amazing picnic with wine and bananagrams (<–we are so cool).
As the sun began to set, we walked over to the ridge to watch the colors change. I snapped a quick photo of Jesse with the dogs frolicking in the background, and he in turn took one of me. I was so absorbed though by the gorgeous scenery that when he hugged me and told me that he loved me so much, I still had no idea what was coming! But as he looked at me and told me that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me, it finally clicked, and as he knelt down and opened the ring box, I was so surprised that all I could manage was an emphatic nod “yes”!
After what seemed an eternity of happy hugs and kisses, Jesse confirmed “so that’s a yes then? …do you want your ring!?” …I had been so shocked that I had completely forgotten the ring, and when he slipped it on my finger I saw that it was perfect! (Minus the smalllll detail that it was so big it could have fit on my thumb ;) Many thanks to Jewelry on James for resizing it in four hours so I could wear it the next night!)
Jesse right before he proposed! ˆ
…and right after! ˆ
It came out later that Jesse had picked this spot because it’s where he first knew he was falling in love with me–and I couldn’t have asked for anything more perfect. Spending the next few days telling our family and friends was such an incredibly happy time–we were even able to Skype with my sister Sarah in Kashmir where she’s traveling with her husband at the moment–and the memory of that first week will be my favorite for a long time to come.
I’m so excited to see what the next few months hold for us, and I can’t wait to say “I do” to my favorite person. Many thanks to everyone for the cards, gifts and well wishes too! It’s been a beautiful time for both of us and I’m so happy we’ve been able to share it with so many of our loved ones too :)
Have a happy weekend guys and gals! xx
